Hello, my name is Deepa de Alwis, and I was born and raised in Sri Lanka. My sisters and I are hoping to raise $10,000 in memory of our Mother who died in August 2021 from complications of thyroid cancer. Our Mom was treated at the Apeksha (Hope) Hospital and we would like to support low-income cancer patients and their families by providing electricity to Cancer Care Welfare Foundation (CCWF) https://www.ccwf.lk/
People from around Sri Lanka come to Apeksha Hospital near Colombo for treatment. While the treatments are completely free, many families from rural areas can't afford to stay in hotels or buy food while getting treatment. Those who are receiving radiation and chemotherapy, can't stay in the hospital due to the lack of beds. The CCWF, located next to the hospital provides free food and lodging for patients and their families who can't travel to the hospital every day. The picture you see is of the children's wing of the patient quarters.
The CCWF is completely run by donations. Due to the nationwide economic collapse, many people can't donate much anymore. In the meantime, electricity rates in Sri Lanka have skyrocketed and the CCWF has to pay a large portion of its dwindling donations in electricity bills. The CCWF wants to install solar panels to save money spent monthly on electricity. So far, of the Rs. 8.1 million (roughly US $27,000) needed, they have about Rs. 2.0 million (US $6,700). Solar electricity has the added benefit of cutting greenhouse gases and air pollution from coal.
