In today's day and age energy access has become a necessity. From cooking, lighting, and heating, it is now extremely critical to have access to electricity. However, not everyone around the world is so fortunate to have access to it. In the world today about 1.3 billion people do not have access to energy, and a further 620 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to energy (UNDP). In Uganda alone, 88% of people lack energy access (Roxburgh). Therefore, I want to provide solar panels as a form of clean, affordable, and accessible energy to a developing village Uganda. I have been able to meet and interview a man for the Gulu Area in Uganda named Simon and hear his experiences using this technology. He was able to connect me with the man he bought his panels from, who I have emailed back and forth with discussing prices and installation. He told me that it would cost only $250 to provide a 75 watt solar panel, a battery, an inverter, a charge controller, framing, install costs, and bulbs. This can charge 7+ phones, light 5 to 7 bulbs, provide light for 24 hours, and even provide light and charge phones for 13 hours if it is cloudy.
When electricity is added to a home it helps the family cook and allows for children to read after dark increasing literacy rates greatly. It also provides a sense of independence for the family and allows for them to increase their quality of life. By bringing this technology it addresses UN SDG 7, with the increase of access to energy.
Your support will be greatly appreciated by not only me, but by the family who receives it. Please help me reach my goal and light the life of a family in Uganda.
