In December 2021 two friends (both health retired emergency service volunteers) will undertake an unassisted 3000-mile voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in a tiny recycled 17ft sailing boat to raise money in aid of their favourite charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, Mind, MS-UK, St Helena Hospice (Colchester).
They are working with some leading manufacturers to integrate a mixture of technologies and renewable energy sources to carry out their adventure. They'll have the wind in their sails and a rechargeable electric motor to give them a boost! We are following and supporting 'The Green Blue', a joint environmental awareness programme created by the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine, established in 2005.
This GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise funds specifically for preparing the boat, logistics, safety equipment and extra training required to carry out the voyage safely.
If we hit our fundraising target here.... everything above and beyond will be donated directly to our charities!
> The 3000-mile crossing will be east to west from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean.
> The boat will average 3.5 knots per hour (4mph), a fast walking pace.
> The trip across the Atlantic will take about 30-35 days.
> The largest waves could measure up to 20ft-40ft high – that's higher than the boat mast!
> At its deepest, the Atlantic Ocean is 5.28 miles (8.5km) deep!
> There is no toilet on board – the crew will use a bucket!
> ‘Poppet’ our 'dinghy with a lid' is an early MK1 ‘Leisure 17’ made from fibreglass by Cobramould in Essex. The boat is around 50-years old.
> ‘Poppet' measures just 17ft (5.2m) long – that’s smaller than a Ford Transit van!
> The boat fully provisioned will weigh about 850kg. That is about half the weight of a large family-sized car.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Covid-19 has lead to a drop in donations for our charities, for organising the crossing, and has caused some of our corporate sponsors to 'dropout' on their promises of safety equipment.
We want to raise as much money as possible for charity on top of the costs of preparing the boat, equipment, extra safety training, and logistics. Any extra raised above our GoFundMe target will be distributed amongst our chosen charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, Mind, MS-UK, St Helena Hospice (Colchester).
HOW ELSE CAN I HELP?
> Donate directly to our chosen charities (with Gift Aid) via our fund-raising pages: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SofaToSailboat
> Get involved with the fundraising events which are being planned, unfortunately, we have had to cancel all of our 2020 events due to C-19.
> Donate or sponsor equipment/provisions so that more time can be spent on the fundraising for our charities.
