We are asking for donations to buy soap for people in Cameroon to address the spread of COVID-19.

On March 11th, 2020 the World Health Organization declared the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as a global health pandemic. Despite the initial slow spread of COVID-19 in Africa, today Cameroon has become the most affected country in Central Africa and is among the top five most affected in Sub-Saharan Africa. Consequently, the number of cases has been continuing to rapidly increase within the country. This spread can be explained in part by a lack of accurate information. This widespread misinformation around COVID-19 in Cameroon prevents individuals within the local communities from engaging in safety behaviour and taking proper precautions. Moreover, due to Cameroon’s inadequate healthcare system the poorest families are the hardest reach.

In an effort to help address the spread of COVID-19 in Cameroon, we have started an initiative that aims to promote handwashing, share accurate information, and support women and communities in all parts of Cameroon.

Our strategy

1) We reach out to quarterheads/neighbourhood leaders in Cameroon and provide them with enough soap/savon to regularly ensure that everyone in their quarter has soap/savon.
2) In every quarter we have at least one person who is championing the importance of handwashing with soap to reduce COVID-19 transmission. This person/people works with the quarterhead to distribute soap in their neighbourhood and share information regarding COVID-19.
3) We support women and women's groups in each region and neighbourhood by purchasing soap from them and finding ways to train them to enhance their entrepreneurial skills.
4) We have also developed a website which includes other sources of relevant educational materials. By including resources and responses by other non-governmental organisations and groups, we can both amplify their work and reduce duplication and redundancy.

The overall project started in March 2020. We have successfully piloted the project in neighbourhoods in Yaoundé and Bamenda and will be continuing as long as possible/necessary.

Please Donate

To successfully achieve our goals, we need your help. Currently it costs about $200 to $500 or more to supply soap to the houses in one quarter, based on a cost of about 300 CFA per block of soap and approximately 120 houses. Of course, the actual cost for a quarter depends on the size of the quarter and other factors. We are looking to collect enough funds to ensure that everyone in a quarter receives soap.

Donations of any size are truly welcomed - even just sharing this on your social media can make a difference!
