SMSANZ Project Beyond Borders 2020 - Cambodia

Donation protected
Project Beyond Borders is a medical humanitarian aid branch established under the auspices of the Singapore Medical Society of Australia and New Zealand (SMSANZ). In conjunction with ACTS Singapore,  Beyond Borders conducted a mission trip to villages in Cambodia last December, where teams of medical student volunteers provided health education and medical aid.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 medical mission trip has been suspended. However, we strongly believe that we can continue to help these communities in other ways this year, especially in light of the additional stressors brought about by the current global crisis.

Attached below is an appeal letter from the Salesian Sisters of Phnom Penh, depicting the challenges these villages face amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Majority of the people who the Sisters work with are tuk-tuk drivers and factory workers. The lockdown in Phnom Penh and the ‘dry’ tourism season has put many of them out of jobs. Furthermore, the suspension of classes since March has deprived students of the free lunch meal they usually receive in school. Families are struggling to afford basic necessities and food for their daily sustenance, let alone healthcare costs.

The organising team has decided to implement a two-year project. The first year will focus on fundraising and health education efforts, while we remain hopeful for a physical mission trip in the second year, subject to travel restrictions.

Who will your donations help?
Villages in Phnom Penh (Phum Chreh, Wat Champa and Boeung Trabek) and Taom.

How will your donations help them?
1. The Salesian Sisters are packing ‘love parcels’, the contents of which are described below. Each pack aims to feed one family for one month and costs approximately US$25 and there are over 500 families that need help over the coming months.

2. In response to the low levels of health literacy in these villages that appear to result in poor health outcomes, Beyond Borders has established an Education Subcommittee. The team’s efforts are focused on developing health education lesson plans to be delivered to students by collaborating with translators. Your donations will help in reducing the cost of lesson materials, including the printing of workbooks for the students.

Our aim is to raise SGD1500 (AUD1600) by 31 December 2020, ALL of which will go towards the needs of the villagers. (Volunteers who participate in this trip will cover travel and accommodation themselves.)

Thank you in advance for your generous donations!
