Sri Lanka trip to help mentally ill
Donation protected
Mental health has always played a big part in my life. My dad was an inspiration to me, the way he overcame everything in his life and always had a smile on his face no matter what taught me the best life lesson I could have learnt. Losing the strongest, best parent I could of asked for at 14 years old has affected my mental health and my families too. Seeing this first hand, the struggle has motivated me to want to help others and become a therapist. Having a bereavement councillor myself and realising the differences that they can achieve in a persons mental health has made me want to become a psychiatrist so I can help others too.
SLV Global is an international volunteering organisation which helps the most vulnerable people in the poorest of countries. They run mental health placements which include visiting psychiatric hospital wards, special needs centres/schools and residential homes. The placement includes working with vulnerable children and adults, working with people with specific needs, discovering trauma from a Sri Lankan perspective and shadowing a psychiatrist. The fees cover all the workshops, training, and a homestay where I will living with a Sri Lankan family and experiencing a third world country first hand. Making a difference in this country and then using this experience to continue making a difference in many people's lives would mean so much to me and would increase my experience so I can reach my goal of making a difference, and making my dad proud of me.
I am also currently planning fundraising activities and events.
