I met Sheena 6 years ago at school for Mental Health and Addictions. I became very close with her and her family and have seen how hard she has worked ever since! She has had 2 jobs for most of that time, never working for less than 50 hours a week! It was always mind blowing to me how she held it together so well for her and her girls.
Starting last year she began to face major health struggles starting with the need for a hysterectomy, appendicitis which put her in the hospital at Christmas last year, autoimmune diagnosis’s and on top of this very significant trauma from her job as a frontline worker with the most severe and persistent drug users in Victoria. This population is very near and dear to her heart and she really did sacrifice herself to give them the care they don’t often receive.
As things continued to pile up I knew something had to give and 4 months ago she had to take a leave to give herself some much needed time to rest and heal. Now this wasn’t an easy choice for her and she was in overdrive to return back to her role as soon as possible! This worried me but she is unstoppable (for better or worse). Now under the recommendation of mental health professionals and doctors she is on board with taking an extended leave and one of the biggest barriers to this is finances. (Its really incredible how little support is provided under these circumstances) With three girls at home and the economy how it is I am hoping that community can come together and each give a little to take some of the burden off her plate.
No amount is too small. I think we’d all hope to receive this kind of help if we were handed similar cards. Thank you so much for your consideration
