Yesterday, someone in the SilverLeaf neighborhood found two Angora rabbits abandoned and left outside. They were severely matted and clearly neglected. When we saw the post, we couldn’t stop thinking about them — so we went and picked them up.

They are safe now. They’re eating, drinking, and resting. But after getting a closer look, the situation is worse than we initially realized.

Angora rabbits have extremely dense wool, and when it becomes this severely matted, it traps urine and feces against their skin. This can lead to painful urine scald, skin infections, open sores, and even maggots if left untreated. These mats are so tight against their skin that they cannot be safely removed while they’re awake — attempting to do so would cause extreme pain and risk serious injury.

The next step is veterinary treatment under anesthesia so they can be fully shaved down, assessed for infection, and treated properly. The estimate for both rabbits is approximately $1,800.

As much as I wish we could quietly absorb that cost through Stair Masters Moving, we simply can’t take on an unexpected $1,800 emergency vet bill alone. But we also cannot let them continue suffering.
