Signs of Change New Castle
Earlier this summer, a young artist from the town of New Castle devoted his time and passion to creating a piece of art in support of Black Lives Matter. The artist’s banner was prominently displayed at the Chappaqua Friends Meeting House.
In mid July, the word “Black” of Black Lives Matter was whited out in an act of vandalism. The artist, undeterred, repainted the banner.
Sadly, a week later, the banner was spray-painted over. Once again, the artist responded by restoring the banner and the message.
During the night of August 5th the banner was set on fire and fully destroyed. In less than 24 hours a new sign was made and installed.
Many in our community have been outraged by these hateful acts. So many have asked: “How can we best support the artist?…How best to respond to this crime in our community?...How can we express our support for Black Lives Matter?”
Signs of Change was established to support the creation of many more signs, replicating the young artist’s design, to be displayed throughout our community. Acts of hate and vandalism cannot erase this message, nor silence the support of people in our community. We are seeking your help to spread the message and support the work many are already doing for Black Lives Matter.
A donation in any amount will help offset the material costs for large hand painted signs and producing smaller printed yard signs. Please consider one of the following sponsorship levels:
-Large Sign or Banner | $400 | Support a 4’x7’ sign or banner for yourself, a business or a local organization
-Neighborhood Sign Pod | $200 | 10 yard signs for a group of friends or neighborhood
-Single Sign | $25 | Together, one becomes many
**If you would like a sign, please specify in the comments section of your donation. If you request a sign we will send pickup up or delivery options.
In addition, any incremental funds raised beyond the cost of materials will be donated to the following organizations. Please take time to learn about how your contribution can support the work these organizations do every day to counter inequality and to lift up the lives of those they serve.
· Children’s Aid Society Wagon Road Camp https://www.childrensaidnyc.org/programs/wagon-road-camp
· Chappaqua Summer Scholarship Program (CSSP) https://www.chappaquasummerscholarship.com/the-program
Our hope is to reach our goal of $5000 by the end of August. We greatly appreciate any and all donations, even if you cannot donate, please consider sharing this page. Please share our goal with someone you know.
“A sign is a good way to express your support and contribute to some great local organizations. Many signs around town will be a constant reminder of the support we have to keep working toward equality.”
