Long story short - Covid-19 is scary, everyone wants to help, no one knows how. I can't manufacture ventilators, I don't have any masks, and I am not a trained physician. BUT! I have a car, local neighborhood restaurants struggling with the citywide closures, and a medical professional for a husband.
My husband is a resident at Queens Hospital Center in Jamaica, Queens. It's the sister hospital of Elmhurst Hospital (recently of NY Times fame) and one of the hardest hit hospitals in the country.
On his day off, he made delicious Millionaire Bars to share that were able to lift his coworkers' spirits, even if only for a few moments, and an idea struck.
I'm hoping to raise money that can be beneficial in two ways:
1) Support local businesses by purchasing small meals and snacks that can be brought to the hospital.
2) Feed and raise the spirits of the incredible heroes working at these overcrowded, undersupplied hospitals.
If you can donate, any amount will be appreciated, and every cent will be put toward purchasing meals that can be microwaved, snacked on, and generally enjoyed when nurses and doctors have a spare moment between saving lives. I'm starting with Queens Hospital Center right now but hopefully if word spreads and the system seems to be working, I will branch out to Elmhurst and beyond.
If you are a restaurant that would be interested in participating, please contact me and we'll get you on the list - for now we're kind of Queens and Brooklyn only based on where I can drive. We're looking for food that can be microwaved, served cold or at room temperature, or can keep for at least two days in a refrigerator or out. Additionally, food needs to be Grab & Go style: individually wrapped or easily grabbed with tongs. If we find a way to start scheduling hot food meal drop-off, I'll update this page.
Thank you so much for your generosity! #SideLineHeroesNYC
