Shower Works - Mobile Showering Stations

Donation protected

Welcome to Shower Works! Shower Works is a non-profit organization that aims to allow the homeless community to feel humanized with dignity by providing personal showers and restroom time within clean and sanitary facilities. It was founded by Shirley Alexander, and Gary Harrell who served 45 years in prison and was released from San Quentin in 2020.

About 6,000 individuals are on the streets of Sacramento, CA on any given night. Of that 6,000 only about 1,400 people can utilize the city's shelters or restrooms, leaving over 4,500 persons without access to hygiene services or restroom facilities each day. As a result, those experiencing homelessness are forced to use public restrooms in restaurants and local businesses in an effort to try to stay clean and maintain some semblance of dignity. Shower Works hopes to change this by setting up designated mobile showering stations to allow our unhoused community to restore their humanity and go on with their day.

Shower Works is a mobile showering station that moves to different designated locations. We plan to offer our services 5 days a week, Monday - Friday, from 9am to 2pm. Our mobile stations are safe and clean, and will be monitored by staff and sanitized in-between uses. They offer privacy for each guest, and their very inclusive. Shower Works means less stress on local businesses and restaurants, and less stress on health care facilities and hospital emergency rooms. Shower Works represents savings on local tax dollars within the Sacramento area.

We seek $500,000. This amount will be used to secure six mobile showering stations. With just one mobile showering station, we will be able to impact 80 unhoused persons everyday. The rest of the mobile stations will allow us to branch out to neighboring disadvantaged cities of Rancho Cordova, Stockton, Modesto, Antioch, and Vacaville. We hope to impact all of California and further into the United States. We project to launch and become full functional within the next 3-6 months.

After serving a 45-year prison sentence, Shower Works Co-Founder and CEO Gary Harrell worked as a monitor at a public restroom location in San Francisco, CA. During his time there, he realized that there weren't any showering facilities for the unhoused in his own community of Sacramento. Having a BIG HEART, Gary was led to come up with a solution to help the people in his own community that could not get access to clean showers and restrooms, now known as Shower Works.

Shower Works is being mentored by LavamaeX, a proven model that works. We will be taking our mobile trailers to the most needed areas in the Greater Sacramento and surrounding areas. We have teamed up with local churches and businesses willing to assist with supplies, ministries, parking, time, etc.
