Short-Term Longhouse, Long-Term Greenhouse
Donation protected
Short-Term Longhouse:
As residents of Charlotte, it has been indescribably sad to see the unprecedented rise of homelessness and poverty affecting our fellow Charlotteans, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to combat these grave circumstances, we have designed short-term, quick-build housing structures which are an improvement over the tent settlements popping up throughout the Queen City.
Each of these temporary longhouses measure 13' x 25', have insulated floors and weatherproof walls, and can house between 10-12 of our neighbors. Since all labor is donated, the entire cost for one longhouse is only $1,750.
We are hoping to raise $7,000 in charitable donations from the residents of Mecklenburg County in order to build four of these structures in the areas where they would be best utilized.
Long-Term Greenhouse:
As previously stated, these structures are intended only to be short-term housing solutions to fill a current and dire need; they will suffice, for a time, while we collaborate with community leaders to find more permanent avenues for rehoming and re-entry into the workforce for those affected most harshly during the pandemic.
As the housing structures begin to wear, new longhouses will be added, and the previous installations will be repurposed into community greenhouses, providing for free food to be grown and shared by all members of the community.
Donated labor and materials will be used for the retrofitting process, allowing all continued funding to be used solely for expansion of the short-term longhouse project.
