Shipping Smiles: Shelter for the Bahamas

Hurricane Dorian has left thousands of people homeless in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas. Almost every home there was either destroyed or heavily damaged. Over ninety percent of the remaining homes are inhabitable. The need for dry, secure, safe shelter for both affected Bahamians and relief workers is critical.

A group of volunteers in Eustis, Florida are repurposing used shipping containers into air-conditioned housing units which contain beds, a small kitchen, and a toilet. Beautiful mural artwork will also be added to the back wall. They are powered by a portable generator, easy to ship, highly durable and mobile.

Approval has been granted by the Bahamian government to allow these containers to serve as temporary housing. The first two are being shipped to Marsh Harbour in the Abaco islands the last week of October.

Abaco Forever, Inc., a 501(c)(3) status pending Florida-based corporation, is committed to help raise funds to support this project.
