Donation protected
The above pictured ambulance is a generous corporate donation achieved with assistance from local government officials and the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Knoxville for the purpose of serving the peoples of Bababe, Mauritania and surrounding areas. This Go Fund Me request is for donations to cover the costs of ground transport and shipping for the ambulance from Knoxville, Tennessee to a nonprofit women’s cooperative [called Touleldoroga] in Bababe.

I, Amadou Sall, was born and raised in Bababe, Mauritania (West Africa) and came to the US for my college education. I obtained my Ph.D from The University of Tennessee,Knoxville  where I now teach and lead an International Service Learning Program in Africa that I developed in 2005.

While I make my home now in Knoxville, Tennessee, I stay in frequent touch with my family back in Mauritania and try to visit Bababe once every year. There is one non-critical care clinic there in Bababe, with one Medical Doctor, one Registered Nurse and two Assistant Nurses. The Clinic serves Bababe and the surrounding villages, a population total of more than 30,000 people. However, the closest, modern hospitals are 4 to 5 hours away.

In 2012, my sister-in-law, in labor with twins, died on her way to the nearest hospital. Since then, Bababe has obtained one ambulance, but it is simply an SUV painted as an ambulance with a stretcher in it. This past December when I visited my family, I learned of more tragic stories that might have had better endings with the availability of modern ambulance medical equipment during transport.

Upon my return to Knoxville, I spoke with the Mayor, Madeline Rogero, and asked for her help in locating an adequate ambulance for Bababe. In support of this effort, she connected me with Stan Sharp, Chief of the Fire Department, to determine how to go about securing the donation of an ambulance. Fire Chief Sharp appealed to Richard Holbert for assistance. Note that included in EnvisionHealthcare’s mission is the statement: "We believe giving back is more than money; it's also about dedicating time and resources to help our patients and communities to be safer, healthier and more productive."

Mr. Holbert graciously worked with me in providing the necessary information to complete a successful application to Envision Healtjcare for the well-equipped ambulance. The Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Knoxville kindly agreed to serve as the nonprofit organization who would list on behalf of the Bababe ambulance project and secured insurance coverage for its transport as well.

This $4,000 request for donations is the estimated amount needed to cover ground transportation from Knoxville, Tennessee to the port of Baltimore, Maryland and the shipping costs and customs fees for shipping from the Baltimore port to the port of Nouakchott, Mauritania. From there, the costs of retaining a driver and gas mileage
to Bababe.
