Help Kathi Finish Her NICU Nursing Degree – For Her Family, and Mine
Kathi is the biological mother of my son, Jaxson. After years apart, they’ve recently reunited — and witnessing the healing this has brought to my son's heart has been a gift beyond anything I could provide as his adoptive mom. Their bond is deep and powerful, rooted in resilience, forgiveness, and shared experience. Now, Kathi needs our help to cross the finish line of a journey that will change her life — and Jaxson’s — forever.
Kathi’s Dream: Caring for the Most Vulnerable
Kathi has completed all of her coursework toward a nursing degree with a specialization in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) at Colorado Christian University. Her dream is to care for the most fragile newborns — a calling that requires strength, compassion, and skill. She has all three.
She now faces 14 months of clinical rotations at Denver College of Nursing — the final step before graduation. But due to recent funding cuts, Kathi has been left without the financial aid she was counting on. She is no longer eligible for funding that once supported her, and because she doesn’t have a co-signer, she can’t secure a private loan.
“I have no one. I’ve never had anyone. I’ve had to do everything myself. Since they took the funding, I feel hopeless.” — Kathi
Why This Matters — For Her, For Jaxson, and For All of Us
Kathi will be the first in her family to earn a college degree. Her success is about more than a diploma. It’s about rewriting a legacy of generational trauma — the kind that many moms in the foster care system endure and overcome against all odds.
Jaxson and Kathi share more than DNA. They both faced turbulent teenage years, involving gangs, addiction, and pain. But Kathi changed her life, thanks in part to the love and stability of her husband of 14 years. She is now raising two beautiful children in Denver, ages 2 and 7 — and for now, she’s also caring for Jaxson.
She’s shown him a life outside of crime. She’s shown him that his bloodline is strong, capable, and worthy. By finishing this degree, Kathi will show him — and all of us — what is possible when we believe in one another.
How You Can Help
We’re raising funds to cover Kathi’s tuition so she can complete her clinicals and graduate. I will collect the funds and pay the college directly to ensure full transparency and accountability.
If you’ve ever wondered how to make a direct impact on someone’s life — this is it. Your support will not only help a dedicated student and loving mom achieve her dream, but will also give my son a living example of triumph, healing, and purpose.
Please give what you can. And please share Kathi’s story. Let’s be the “someone” she’s never had — and the village that lifts up a family for generations to come.
With gratitude,
Melissa
