Shenoa's Volunteer Nursing Mission in Ghana

Hello hello! I'm Shenoa/Rio.

I am a registered nurse living in Münster, Germany.

I grew up believing that as a citizen of the world with both the knowledge and abilities that I have now learned, it is my responsibility and privilege to provide care to those who need it.

I graduated nursing school in 2022, and was asked to work on an intensive care neurological rehabilitation unit.

I work with 2-4 patients every shift who have undergone severe neurological trauma and are suffering immensely. Despite the difficulties that come with it, I can say with utmost conviction that I love my job, it has given me a resilience and patience, along with radical acceptance of ones-self and abilities, and a deeper understanding of what it means to overcome extreme hardships.

So here I am, working to fulfil a dream of mine to help provide healthcare to vulnerable communities. I am blessed to have the opportunity to go to Ghana with Nurses Beyond Borders and WAHEF (West African Health and Education Foundation) for 4 weeks in November 2024 as a public health nurse, providing care and education to children and their families living in rural villages. I will also be working with doctors in the cities, acting as their liaison in the villages.

Unfortunately, capitalism prevails and volunteer missions cost money. The money from this GoFundMe will go directly to my food, board and transport during the mission, in addition to medical supplies (such as scrubs, menstrual products such as pads and tampons, wound care, and products for dental tools and hygiene). Any amount, whether it’s 20 euros or 2, is so so so appreciated! If people local to Germany wish to donate supplies directly, I will be taking a suitcase full of medical and other hygiene supplies.

Ich bin examinierte Krankenpfleger*in und lebe in Münster, Deutschland. Ich bin mit der Überzeugung aufgewachsen, dass es meine Verantwortung und mein Privileg ist, als Weltbürgerin mit dem Wissen und den Fähigkeiten, die ich jetzt erlernt habe, denjenigen zu helfen, die es brauchen.

Ich habe das Glück, 4 Wochen lang in November mit Nurses Beyond Borders und WAHEF (West African Health and Education Foundation) als Krankenpfleger*in für das öffentliche Gesundheitswesen in Ghana zu arbeiten um Kinder und ihre Familien in ländlichen Dörfern zu betreuen und aufzuklären. Ich werde auch mit Ärzten in den Städten zusammenarbeiten und als deren Verbindungsperson in den Dörfern fungieren.

Leider herrscht der Kapitalismus vor, und Missionen kosten Geld. Das Geld aus diesem GoFundMe-Projekt wird direkt für meine Verpflegung, Unterkunft und Transport während des Einsatzes sowie für medizinische Hilfsmittel (z. B. OP-Kleidung, Menstruationsprodukte wie Binden und Tampons, Wundversorgung und Produkte für zahnärztliche Werkzeuge und Hygiene) verwendet. Jeder Betrag ist willkommen!
