Shatera's Public Health Brigade

Hello,  friends and family! My name is Shatera McNair, and the Global Brigades community service initiative has selected me to participate in an incredible public health service opportunity to Honduras from January 2nd - 8th, 2019. However, I cannot pursue this opportunity without the help of friends and family. Therefore, I ask as a dedicated MERIT alumni and an aspiring public health care professional to please help me to raise money to fund this service learning experience that will permit me to teach public health education to poor rural communities in Honduras.

As a first-generation freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), I have learned of an incredible opportunity called Global Brigades -- an international program that sends a group of students to empower underdeveloped communities in Honduras, Ghana, or Panama through integrated sustainable approaches. With the mission to permanently raise communities out of poverty and eliminate health and economic disparities worldwide, there is a plethora of service brigades offered through the program. In my service experience, I am particularly interested in pursing the Public Health Global Brigade. The brigade will allow me to empower rural communities by building infrastructure developments and providing public health education through direct service with community members in Honduras.

By participating in Public Health Global Brigades in Honduras, I will teach education curriculum that addresses personal hygiene, heathy lifestyle, and cleanliness to community members; build sanitation stations (bathrooms) in homes; implement water systems to create clean drinking water structures; help to conduct healthcare analyses of our efforts; ensure project sustainability to maximize the positive effect of our service.

I am passionate about Public Health Global Brigade because the project aligns perfectly with my professional goals and career aspirations as an aspiring global health community change agent. The Medical Education Resources Initiative for Teens (MERIT) has helped me to further construct my role in society as a contributing member with a passion for population health and reducing health equities. This program will allow me to gain real world experience in combating health disparities by building in-home infrastructure through direct service.

Thus, please help me to reach my fundraising goal of $2000. I cannot attend this amazing service project without your help!
