Sharing Music in Refugee Camps
Last year, when I worked at Moria refugee camp in Greece I dreamed about developing an informal camp choir. This year I have found out that there is a charity doing this and more.
In July I will be working with connect by music who are working with refugees across Greece. They give refugees hope and purpose, teaching music formally and informally, in the unicef school, in community spaces and in the camps themselves. I will be working as a teacher, a singing leader, and supporting people to join in activities. For example they have womens singing circles where women can share songs and stories from their homelands, safe from the pressures of camp life at least for these moments.
The refugee camps are overcrowded places where people are pushed to their limits by a system that is punishing them for coming from a war torn place. The need for diversion, respite, distraction is essential to mental and physical survival.
Before I go I need to raise some money, to buy instruments, to pay local teachers, and to support the work of connect by music. I will of course be working voluntarily.
I am so honored to be a part of this amazing project and will be so greatful for every penny donated which will help the charity continue to help this ever expanding group of people.
