Share a Witnessing Journey to the Everglades Detention Camp

I’m traveling from Chicago to Florida to bear witness outside the immigrant detention camp located deep in the Everglades. Though it’s become known by an infamous nickname, I stand by the local activists who have chosen not to repeat it.

I committed to two weeks of presence and over 3,000 miles of driving by booking a room and beginning to gather supplies for the hot, wet, mosquito-infested conditions. I expected to cover the cost myself - but so many of you have reached out asking how to contribute that I’ve created this fundraiser. The funds raised will replenish my savings and support me as I begin a Master’s in Social Work the week after I return from Florida.

Your kind words and offers of support have reminded me of a quote from Dr. King: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

I felt called to do this work and took the first step. Now, I see that the staircase is not made of wood and nails, but of the hands of those who long for a more just, more humane, far greater America. They are bearing me up with their words, their prayers, and their offers of support.

I pray that together we keep lifting one another higher, until we all see from that greater vantage point—the one spoken of by the saints, the statesmen, and the better angels of our nation’s past.
