The play structure at Shady Ridge Park was almost 30 years old (installed in 1993) and had been there since I was a little girl. And while I have fond memories of playing on the play structure, it was definitely time to polish up this gem; so that a new generation of kids can enjoy time in this beautiful location.

We are currently in Phase 3 of our fundraising project, focusing on the final three items to add to the park.

1) A nature-themed interactive sensory panel

2) A corresponding seek-and-find activity, matching the animals on the panel to painted rocks hidden in the park

3) a very large, very cool climbable turtle.

Please join me in supporting the Shady Ridge Park update Project by signing our petition or donating to our cause. All money collected will be donated to the city to update Shady Ridge Park.

There are many benefits to children and youth playing outside. They can release energy, use loud voices, play vigorously, and engage in messy projects outdoors. In addition, children can explore the plants and animals in their local ecosystem. Research has helped identify many other benefits to playing outdoors (Children and Nature Network, 2012), such as:

We also know that the quality of the outdoor environment matters. Children are more likely to enjoy and engage in environments that are flexible, where equipment is open-ended and can function in multiple ways (e.g., balls, sandboxes, self-constructed forts), and where active play is supported. In fact, playground design can impact children’s creative thinking, sense of competence, and motor skill development.
