Fifty years ago, a decision was made that changed history.

It was decided that Black communities deserved more than a nod in someone else’s newspaper where the narrative was second hand at best and framed through a negative perspective as the norm. We deserved a publication of our own—somewhere not beholden to corporate and political interests, a place to tell our stories, celebrate our own victories, and somewhere we could challenge the injustices that prevailed across the nation. A place to preserve our history, and speak truth without being edited. A place for free voices in a world that wasn’t.

That decision became the San Francisco Bay View.

For nearly half a century, the Bay View has documented the voices, struggles, triumphs, culture, and resilience of Black communities in San Francisco, Oakland, and later traveling far beyond the shores of America. The Bay View was writing and recording history in real time before the podcasts, before social media influencers and even before citizen journalism.

There have been generations who have seen themselves in the ink of its pages.

And now, as we approach our 50th anniversary, we find ourselves standing at a crossroads.

We haven’t run out of stories to tell. The world hasn’t stopped being newsworthy. Our readers haven’t abandoned us.

We’re here because the future of independent journalism requires resources.

Today, the Bay View is undergoing a rebirth.

A new generation of writers, editors, designers, photographers, artists, and community storytellers has joined the effort to help carry this historic institution into its next chapter. Together, we’re building a stronger publication, modernizing our production, expanding our reach, and preparing a powerful 50th Anniversary Edition worthy of the legacy that came before us.

But before we can reach the future, we must secure the present.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 through our “50 for 50” campaign.

These funds will help us stabilize operations and continue publishing during this critical transition by covering:

• Past-due rent and utilities
• Graphic design and production costs
• Art direction and visual storytelling
• Technology and IT support
• Writers, editors, and contributors
• Essential printing and publication expenses

The reality is simple.

If we cannot produce a strong, professional publication during this milestone year, we risk losing the advertising revenue and community support that help sustain future issues.

This isn’t about saving a newspaper.

While it’s about about preserving a voice and a record, it’s about saving a legacy future and past. A platform that has spent fifty years not only telling, but supporting stories that might otherwise have been forgotten.

We believe the Bay View’s best days are still ahead.

And we’re inviting our community to help write the next chapter.

As part of our Golden Anniversary celebration, we are launching a series of events and community gatherings throughout the year, beginning with our July 16th “50 for 50” fundraiser in partnership with the San Francisco Black Film Festival. The evening will feature a special film screening, community conversation, and a celebration of Black media, storytelling, and culture at a moment when independent voices are needed more than ever.

But the success of this campaign cannot depend on one event alone.

It depends on all of us.

If 1,000 supporters contribute $50, we reach our goal.

If you can give more, your contribution helps ensure that this institution remains a vital part of our community for generations to come.

And if you cannot give today, please share this campaign. Every share matters. Every act of support helps build a bridge between the Bay View’s first fifty years and its next fifty.

Donate. Share. Preserve the Legacy.

Together, we can make this happen.

P.S.

Thank you for reading this and for believing in the importance of independent Black journalism.

Through obstacles one can only imagine, for nearly fifty years, the San Francisco Bay View has shown up for our community—documenting our history, celebrating our culture, and amplifying voices too often ignored.

Whether you donate $5, $50, $500, or simply share this campaign with others, you become part of that legacy.

Thank you for helping us carry the Bay View into its next fifty years.
