I'm running the Kent Marathon on Sunday 13th April to raise money to pay for repairs to St Mary's Sevington Church Spire.
St Mary's Church, Sevington is our Norman Parish church. It is a Grade I listed building dating from the 12th century (although it is reported in the Doomsday Book that it replaced a Saxon church) and has been altered several times; first around the 13th century (about 1200) and a second time in the 14th century, and underwent restoration in 1877 and 1936. Construction is of Ragstone with a plain tiled roof, with a timber framed porch and a singled spire.
In spite of its isolated position St Mary's Church, Sevington has a small congregation that has remained loyal to their church, offering a warm welcome to all who enter the building. The church is also a local landmark, especially for passing motorists entering Ashford from M20 J10 or J10A. During religious festivals the church is floodlit.
It is a very rare and beautiful building and we desperately want to keep it is a good state to preserve this historic building for the community of Sevington and the surrounding area for years to come.
I have decided to raise funds by asking for a small donation for which I will be running the Kent Marathon. It starts (and finishes) at Sandyacres, Kennington so should really be called the Ashford Marathon.
