Who is a Refugee?
The UN defines a refugee as one “who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.”
These people leave behind everything they know and have—from their homes to the languages they speak— in order to preserve their lives.
According to the Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies, 80% of refugee households in Georgia are working and paying their own expenses within six months of arrival—the highest early self-sufficiency rate in the country.
Who we are
We volunteer with City Hope Community, a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Clarkston, Georgia—home to many of Georgia’s refugees.
City Hope’s mission is to mobilize individuals and churches in taking up the care and cause of refugee families. For 10 years, City Hope has provided over 500 families with resources and services, thanks to the donations of those in our community.
City Hope serves Clarkston’s refugees in several ways: ESL/Citizenship Classes, The Distribution Center (providing necessary items to newly arrived families), afterschool programs, Saturday tutoring, small group mentorship, leadership camps, etc.
We (the organizers of this gofundme) serve as Saturday tutors: Every Saturday morning, we visit the home of our “matched” refugee family in Clarkston and spend time with the kids either reading books, practicing multiplication facts, watching movies, making crafts, etc. Our goal is to foster genuine relationships with our kids and improve their social and literacy skills.
The problem
Due to COVID-19, millions of low-income families are struggling as they deal with unexpected job loss and an unreliable stream of income. The people City Hope serves are no exception.
Families that rely on reduced/free school lunches must now deal with the issue of feeding their kids due to the state closure of the school for the rest of the year.
How you can help
Although we are practicing social distancing and are no longer able to visit our refugee family, City Hope is trying to ease the financial burden of refugee families by providing essential items like food, medicine, and sanitization products. In addition, City Hope is also providing reliable information concerning the virus—something crucial in this strange, confusing time.
