The Sequim Chapter of Salmon for Soldiers has been actively putting experiences in front of our deserving US Military Veterans for several years.
We set a goal for 2021 to double our efforts from 2020. So far, we are on pace to exceed that goal. Aside from one windy day with an issued 'Small Craft Advisory' we have taken a crew of veterans out for a bucket list halibut trip each and every Thursday in May and June.
As the season nears an end - we have our sights set on 2022 and beyond.
Here is our schedule so far in 2021 - we have taken 36 veterans out for deep water halibut trips in seven days of fishing. The veterans are never charged a single cent - fishing license, bait, gear, fuel, beverages and boat snacks are all provided. These are experiences that are financially out of reach for many of our guests. The average price for these types of trips is around $450 and with 36 experiences and counting, our efforts have put over $16,000 worth of fishing trips in the hands of veterans.
We need your help for 2022.
Once again, we are setting our sights on doubling our efforts next year.
The halibut season we are offered is typically two days a week and for a total of eight weeks.
In 2022, we are determining a path to fish both days halibut season for two months straight.
Our costs per trip are approximately $500 covering fuel, maintenance, gear, bait, ice, vacuum sealed bags, beverages, and food. We do our absolute best to be responsible with the funds we use.
In addition to our efforts during halibut season, we are putting together an August 2021 event where 30 volunteer skippers are taking over 65 veterans out for a day of salmon fishing. The day starts with coffee and rolls and ends with an incredible BBQ. Again, all of this is at no expense to the veterans.
Our goal of raising $10,000 will ensure we are able to double our efforts and put experiences in front of over 100 veterans in 2022 in addition to growing our August event to over 100 veteran experiences by expanding it to a two day event.
Here are the guarantees:
1) 100% of your donations will be spent on the North Olympic Peninsula.
2) We don't have a single paid member on our staff - all of our time is donated, use of our boat and gear is donated. We handle our own maintenance and replacement gear.
3) Every experience gets put in the hands of a US military veteran or active duty member - that's where your funds are being spent.
Salmon for Soldiers is a 501(c)3 charitable organization with the mission of offering a sense of normalcy and relaxation to our nation's veterans through fishing.
