Help Send Mia to Kenya

About me

Hi! My name is Mia and I am a second-year student at the University of Ottawa. My lifelong dream as a pre-medical student is to become a doctor and help people in the most fulfilling way possible. I can’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t wanted to save lives. On this academic journey, I have graciously been accepted on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Mombasa, Kenya, to begin an internship shadowing physicians in several departments, such as the Emergency/Casualty Ward, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Internal Medicine and Comprehensive Care Clinics. The costs associated with this two-month mission trip are too much for a university student, and I am humbly asking for your assistance and support.

Kenya is a gravely impoverished country with more than half of the citizens living well below the poverty line. Along with this, a deficient healthcare system and a high burden of communicable diseases threatens these people every day. 1.5 million Kenyans live with HIV, and without sufficient healthcare, many will die of AIDS and other diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis. Here, in Canada, I cannot even begin to fathom a society in which these treatable diseases are rampant, particularly afflicting young children and women. They need our help. In June of 2019, I have been given the opportunity to travel to Mombasa, Kenya, to volunteer at the Coast Provincial General Hospital through the organization International Medical Aid. You can alleviate some of the suffering these people endure every day.

About the organization

International Medical Aid is a broad-based not-for-profit organization striving to improve access to medical and public health resources in the world’s most impoverished areas through fully staffed and strategically deployed mobile healthcare campaign. They also provide healthcare internships abroad for undergraduate students, medical students, medical residents, and practitioners in the areas that need it the most. One of their placements in Kenya is stationed at the Coast Provincial General Hospital. This is the second largest public hospital in Kenya. It is a 700 bed, teaching and referral facility serving the entire Coastal Region of Kenya with a population of approximately six million people.

Where your donations will go

·      Full-scale mobile medical clinics to bring much-needed healthcare to impoverished and underserved individuals around the world

·      Flight arrangements

Thank you

I understand that many people do not have the means to go to on a mission trip to a needy country and volunteer. But that doesn’t mean you can't help make a difference. A few dollars go very far in saving a life. Please consider donating to this fund and help others in Mombasa when they need us most.
