Sending Mateo Home: Supporting His Family After Tragic Loss

Mateo Giraldo was a 20 year old Colombian-American who lived in Miami, Fl. He, along with his brother, have moved to the United States to live the American dream, and provide financial support for their parents back in Colombia.

Mateo was a true friend, one who stood by us in times of hardship and celebrated our victories as if they were his own. He was our confidante, our shoulder to cry on, our source of unwavering support. He was there to lift us up when we stumbled, to remind us that we too could conquer our fears, that we too could face adversity with courage and strength.

Because almost all of Mateo’s family lives in Colombia, and his brother lives in New York, his group of friends, and girlfriend were considered just like family. They were inseparable, and spent time with each other almost everyday. They’ve shared memories, stories, do the things they’ve loved, such as going to the beach, riding their motorcycles, eating out, and hung out at his friends house till 2:00 am, laughing and talking all night.

On 05/03/2024, Mateo had work at 10:30 am at Panera Bread. On his way to work, he was involved in a motor-cycle accident. The police arrived at the scene and performed CPR. He was rushed to the hospital, which was later announced that he unfortunately passed away.

Mateo’s family in Colombia were devastated by the news. His parents had hopes and dreams for their kids to have a better future, pursue their goals, and live a life filled with possibilities. Though it meant being separated from their beloved son, they made this sacrifice selflessly, knowing that it was a chance for him to build a brighter tomorrow.

In the wake of the sudden loss of our dear friend, we are reaching out for support to fulfill his parents and family’s wish, to be laid and rest in peace in his homeland of Colombia.
