Send Sonal to Space

Sonal loved space. She would update Carmela and I on new discoveries from distant stars, loved StarTalk radio podcast with NDT (Neil deGrasse Tyson), had her news feed tailored to focus on astronomy events and space discoveries, and for her birthday one year we went to see NDT speak in SF. She took Carmela to the Hubble exhibit in Sacramento and couldn’t wait to see photos from the new James Webb telescope. She loved using our telescope in our backyard with friends, and sometimes just with us. A few weeks ago we took our telescope to a local school field to get an up close view of the lunar eclipse with family and friends, with her leading the charge. She was in awe of the grand scale of our universe and loved learning more about it.
After she passed I was sitting in our backyard with family and dear friends and said, “You know where we should really spread her ashes is space.” It was said as a pipe dream. Turns out it’s possible. Beyond Burials (beyondburials.com) actually takes your loved ones ashes out there.
So this is what we are going to do.
Sonal will return to the stars, perhaps to help create a new star or a new planet with new life one day.
We wanted everyone who loved Sonal to have a chance to help and be part of the process. It is $7500 to send her past our planet’s system which I think is where she would want to be.
There is absolutely no obligation. Just know that when you look up at night there’s a good chance Sonal will be there.
Thanks for your love and support during this time. She loved you all very much.
Nate
p.s. Everyone’s generosity and support has been unbelievable and I’m frankly speechless. It looks like Sonal will be with the stars. Anything over the fundraising goal will be put toward Carmela’s college savings. Thank you all so much.
