Send Shak and Ali Back to Africa to Help Orphans
Donation protected
Ali and Shak are heading back to South Africa in 2019. Our 2017 trip was such a rewarding experience and we are jumping on the opportunity to head back.
In 2017, we travelled to the province of Mpumalanga to help run summer camps for a charity called Mamkhulu. We spent two weeks working with impoverished elementary and high school students, most of whom have lost one or both of their parents. The children attending the camps were recommended by their teachers and identified as the most at-risk.
The camps serve as a way to integrate the students into community youth groups. Camp youth leaders hold youth groups all year-round to stay connected with the children who attend the camps. The youth leaders then report the needs of the children to the charity, such as delivering food for the family or getting child services involved in severe cases. The children are given three square meals, warm donated clothes, and food and other gifts to take back home to their families.
During the course of our stay, Ali served as the resident camp nurse. She checked in with each child, giving them initial examinations and discovering health complications that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. In severe cases, Ali helped transport sick children to local public hospitals.
Shak, a journalism graduate, focused primarily on creating audio-visual content based on the youth leaders' life-experiences. The goal was to share their stories with the world. Both Shak and Ali were also responsible for taking part in camp activities, including sports, health education, simple farming techniques, theatre, dance, and group therapy sessions.
Your donations will help cover Ali and Shak's travel expenses, food, and shelter for the entirety of our stay. This enables us to focus on meeting the children's needs and eases our own financial burdens. Shak, for example, will be taking an unpaid one month leave from his full-time job.
We will be leaving for South Africa sometime in mid-June. Two weeks will be spent operating the camps with roughly two weeks dedicated to leadership courses and getting to know our fellow youth leaders. Anything you can spare is greatly appreciated and we thank you in advance for your kind donations.
*If you would like a tax receipt on donations $20 and over, please contact Ali or Shak separately. GoFundMe will not give you a tax receipt. If you would like to forego the fee GoFundMe takes from donations, you can also contact Ali or Shak for other forms of donations, such as through e-transfer.
