Who am I?
My name is Raiden Mackenzie DeDominicis and I am a boy on a journey. What is my journey? The journey we all take, the journey of life.
Some things that I have done in my life already:
Completed ~3yrs. of a Chemical Engineering Degree, shot an 88 in golf tournament, biked the Oregon Coast, placed second in the Calgary City Science Fair (while having Typhoid), taken up drone photography, founded an avocado shipping business, folded an avocado shipping business, dyed myself purple, volunteered with Engineers Without Borders, coached a little league baseball team, had brief but scary brush with a chainsaw, started a YouTube Channel, and a bunch of other stuff.
A quote from Albert Einstein - "The only source of knowledge is experience."
A student at Queen's University in Kingston, ON but originally from Calgary, AB I'm one of those weird kids who is looking for his place in the world. Not really sure where I'm headed, what I'm doing, or how things are going to turn out. I've reached a pivotal point in my life, one where there are a lot of roads but no 'google' maps to show me the way.
However what I do know is that I can't figure any of that out by staying put and staying complacent. Life should be a gradual upwards slope, always learning, always getting better.
What am I doing?
This summer I have been given the opportunity of a 2-month internship with Queen's Project on International Development (QPID) to travel to Maun, Botswana. In Maun I will be working with an organization called Travel for Impact (TFI). A locally run NGO that partners with tourism companies to reallocate a portion of their funds to a variety of community social initiatives.
Additionally this internship includes a Project ID, meaning as a representative of QPID I will be looking to partner with other local organization for interns (like me!) to work with next year. This portion of the internship will provide an integral look into how charitable organizations work, what makes them successful, and what causes them to struggle.
Why?
This internship is not about going to build wells in a developing country and feeling good about myself. This internship, largely, is not about other people. This internship is for myself.
The mechanics of an organization are something that I am deeply interested in. This opportunity allows me the chance to see into the mechanics of many organizations. To think critically about the work they are doing, the actions that they take, and the actual impact that they have. This is an opportunity to see real development work in action and the real implications that it carries.
I am not going into this position with the expectation of making a huge impact and changing the world. I am choosing this internship because it is unique to what others get to experience. This internship is a direct investment into my critically thinking, my leadership skills, and my character.
How?
Going to Botswana for 2-months is no small expense. QPID projects are planned for an average of $5,000 per intern, each intern is required to contribute $3,000 towards this cost. This amount goes towards airfare, insurance, food, accommodations, visas, and project expenses. It also ensures the continued existence of QPID and the opportunity it can provide for future interns.
This is why I am asking you, the people, to help me out and subsidize some of this cost. To quote my intern partner, “Every little bit helps!” From loonies and toonies to Sir Robert L. Borden’s (the dude on the $100 dollar bill) your contribution to my case is greatly appreciated!
When?
I will be leaving for Botswana the first week of May 2017. My fundraising campaign will end March 31st, 2017 when funds for my trip are due.
What else?
