In rugby sevens you need to be fast, fit, physical. You need to have finesse and skill. You need to be willing to lay it all on the line for 14 minutes, sprinting, tackling, rucking, scrumming...going as hard as you can until the final whistle blows. And then, do it all over again.
It is a fast paced game with seven minute halves, seven athletes per team on the pitch, no timeouts, no stoppage of play, only 2 minutes of rest at half time. The men and women of Metropolis Rugby Football Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota stepped up to play this season and succeeded. They are both on their way to New York City for the National Championship August 11-12th, ready to battle, ready to lay it on the line.
The Metropolis Men have played strong all summer with the goal of the National Championships in mind. They plowed through 3 qualifiers, taking first place at each. There was one final qualifier to make it to Nationals, the Midwest Championships. The men accepted their challenge, and once again, blew through the competition to take first place and advance to New York.
The women's team has battled through adversity this summer, suffering a few unexpected losses. But their determination was not to be outdone at the Midwest Championships, as they walked away with second place and an entry into Nationals.
The teams are preparing harder then ever for New York. They are increasing their fitness, leaning on their coaches and teammates for strength and encouragement. There is one thing that they need to lean on you for, that is financial help getting them there.
The costs of sending two teams to New York City from Minneapolis is not inexpensive. The costs of plane tickets, car rentals, hotels and food all add up quickly. There are no professional team funds, no major league sponsors, the team relies on their personal paychecks and the financial support of friends, family, old boys and rugby fans alike. The hardwork these players have put forth this season, accomplishing the goal of making it to Nationals, should not be taken away because of the expense of the location. Any little bit helps to make sure these two teams can compete with the best, because they deserve to be and are two of the best.
Thank you!!!
