I'm starting this campaign for my dear friend Krista Shiner, a talented artist, dedicated friend and tireless entrepreneur who needs our support during a challenging time.
Krista's Story
In April 2023, Krista had a workplace accident in her studio when she missed the last steps of a ladder. Her right leg took the full impact on the concrete. What seemed minor at first revealed both a torn hip labrum and a genetic hip abnormality requiring complete hip replacement.
The journey to get proper care has been incredibly difficult. Her workers' compensation claim was initially denied, forcing her to hire an attorney just to see a specialist. During this same period, she was caring for her mom who was battling cancer in Michigan and ultimately passed away. The injury also caused vein issues requiring expensive treatment.
After nearly two years of pain and legal battles, Krista finally saw a hip specialist who confirmed hip replacement surgery is her only option. Surgery is scheduled for July 7th.
How You Can Help
Krista faces significant financial challenges, including:
- Medical expenses not covered by insurance
- Loss of income during the 3-6 month recovery period (note that she's been on work restrictions for over a year)
- Lack of full workers' comp benefits (FAMLI only covers 65% of wages for 3 months)
Despite expanding her business and seeking remote opportunities, the uncertainty around surgery dates and recovery has made planning incredibly difficult. Given the physical demands of her lines of work, she will be operating at limited capacity for some time.
