Seeds of Hope: Empowering Farmers in Bungoma, Kenya

Hi! I’m Charlie Martin, a 12-year-old from Issaquah, Washington, and the founder of Charlie Cares. I started this charity because I believe that compassion, combined with action, can make a real difference in people’s lives - no matter how old you are or where you live.

Seeds of Hope was my first campaign. It began with a simple question: What if we could help families grow their own food and earn a living by supporting their farms? That question led to an incredible journey - one that’s already changed hundreds of lives in Bungoma, Kenya.

Why Seeds of Hope Matters

In Bungoma, food insecurity is a daily struggle. Many families rely on small-scale farming to survive, but without access to quality seeds or fertilizer, their harvests are unpredictable - and often not enough. Farming isn’t just a job in Bungoma. It’s how people feed their children, pay school fees, and care for aging parents. But without the right support, it’s nearly impossible to break the cycle of poverty.

Seeds of Hope provides farmers with high-quality maize seeds, fertilizer, and the knowledge they need to increase their yields and support their families. It’s not charity - it’s empowerment.

Four Successful Plantings - And Counting!

Since we launched Seeds of Hope, we’ve completed four full planting cycles. Each one has helped us learn, grow, and reach more people. I’m proud to share that the fourth planting ,just harvested, was our most successful yet!

Here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished so far:

First Planting: We started small - just 80 families. With the help of community leader Patrick Wesonga, we provided seeds and fertilizer, and families worked together to prepare their fields. Their harvest was strong, and it gave them food security for the season. But it also gave them something just as important: hope.
Second Planting: With lessons learned and momentum building, we expanded to over 120 families. We refined our process, gave better planting guidance, and the harvest fed even more people. Many families were able to sell surplus maize for extra income.
Third Planting: This season faced tougher weather conditions, but the community didn’t give up. Their resilience - and Patrick’s leadership - meant that crops still came through. More farmers got involved, and their dedication pushed the campaign forward.
Fourth Planting: This one was different. More experience led to our best harvest yet. Families saw greater yields, and many had enough maize not only for meals but to sell at local markets. That extra income is already being used to buy medicine, school supplies, and clothing. It's working - and it's growing.

How It Works: The Planting Seasons

Bungoma has three key growing seasons each year. Seeds of Hope helps farmers prepare for each one by aligning planting with rainfall:

Long Rains (March-August): The most reliable season for planting maize. Crops planted in March are usually harvested by late July or early August. These harvests are essential for feeding families and storing maize for future use.
Short Rains (September-January): Less predictable but still productive, this season offers another chance to grow. Planting starts in September and harvests come in December or early January.
Dry Season (February-Early March): Farming slows, but some farmers plant fast-growing maize varieties during this period if conditions allow.

By planning ahead and equipping farmers with what they need before each season, Seeds of Hope helps families take full advantage of their land and the changing climate.

Why Agriculture Is the Key

Maize is the staple crop of Kenya. If a family’s maize field thrives, so do their chances of affording school, medicine, and basic necessities. But many farmers don’t have access to quality seeds or the knowledge to manage soil and weather conditions.

That’s where we come in.

Seeds of Hope works with Ronak Agrovet Ltd., a local Kenyan seed bank, to source reliable maize hybrids suited for Bungoma’s climate. These seeds, along with fertilizer and support from leaders like Patrick, make a real difference.

Here’s what we need each season:
$10 per packet: Hybrid 505, 51, 514, 614
$12 per packet: Hybrid Sungura, Tembo, DK 777, 8031

Each packet helps a family plant their field, grow food, and build a more secure future. We aim to raise $2,000 each planting season to cover seeds, fertilizer, and delivery costs.

What Comes Next
The next planting season is right around the corner, and we want to keep this momentum going. Every dollar you give helps more families prepare their land, plant strong crops, and bring in a better harvest. You’re not just giving food - you’re giving opportunity.
Many families have already started using extra income to send their kids to school, buy medicine, and even start small businesses. The ripple effect is real. And it starts with a seed.
