Seeds for Lu’s Dream

Hola! Many of you know that I’m the youngest of 10 kids. I want to introduce you to my brother Luis, aka Memo, aka “mi pequeño Lu Lu” (my little Lu Lu). He is 3 years older than me and one of my best friends.

Lu has been a physical therapist for over 30 years. Whenever anyone in my huge family is in pain, we call for Lu! And over the years I’ve met so many of his patients, who describe how Lu’s healing hands transformed their lives.

Lu’s other passion is futbol (soccer). Like many Colombian kids in the US, we grew up watching soccer together: it connected us to our homeland. Lu has played all his life, and is now a beloved coach for youth teams in the Philly, area including for his own children, the twins Elena and Evan.

Recently, Lu shared a dream: to bring physical therapy care and medical equipment to kids in Colombia who love futbol, but don't have the resources to play competitively.

And then the universe conspired, as it always does when we give voice to our dreams.

Lu got a call from a former patient asking if he could help with a team of young Colombian players who aspire to compete in the World Amputee Football Club. Claro que si, Lu immediately said. Of course!

Today I’m asking for you to join me in planting seeds for Lu’s dream of creating a nonprofit. The initial monetary assistance would buy 25 Lofstrand crutches. Other needs include, soccer cleats, uniforms, travel assistance.

Lu is working with this inspiring team meet their immediate needs and help them become role models. And in the long term, he wants to start a nonprofit to bring the same support for many other aspiring young Colombian players in towns with less resources.
