Rev. Dr. Delle McCormick has access to see and report how our immigration policies are impacting people and shelters in Mexico, particularly those vulnerable populations that are being returned or forced to apply for asylum in countries well-known for their violence and high murder rates. In December, with the help of her colleagues in Mexico’s Jesuit Migrant Ministries and Human Rights organization, she will visit, volunteer, and report on seven shelters in Chiapas, Tabasco, Hidalgo and Mexico City.
Background
For more than twenty-five years, year, Delle has ministered in Mexico and the US, providing advocacy and education around immigration issues. In 2018, she published an award-winning Doctor of Ministry thesis, "Being Church in the Borderlands." Most recently, she has served with families seeking asylum in the US, first through the local church that she pastored and presently at one of the largest shelter programs in the US.
Over the past year, the shelter system where Delle serves as a full-time volunteer has welcomed over 17,000 children, women, and men who enter the US legally seeking asylum. Now families seeking asylum are being detained in large detention facilities in the US or turned back to the violence from which they flee. The number of guests at our Tucson shelters now has been drastically reduced.
Delle has prayerfully considered how to best share insights into how to show the human face of our border policies and sees this as her next right step to "Be church in the Borderlands."She will share updates on her experiences as she visits each shelter. Please join me in supporting Delle's efforts to expand awareness and grow faith across borders.
