Taka Titi – Help Support His Family and Preserve his Legacy
Donation protected
On April 12th, The Gambia lost a national treasure — Lamin Keita, affectionately known to so many as Taka Titi.
To those in Janjanbureh, he was more than just a cultural icon. He was a friend, a welcoming face, and the heartbeat of the community, greeting people off the ferry with his infectious drumming, radiant smile, and unmistakable voice. For me, Jane Smith, he was a long time friend and it’s hard to imagine returning to Janjanbureh without Taka calling me to dance to his drum.
But his influence extended far beyond that and was known throughout the country . Born in Naimina Dankunku but raised and educated in Janjanbureh, Taka Titi became a cultural ambassador, tirelessly promoting the region’s rich traditions. He educated both locals and international visitors, worked passionately with youth in his town and visiting school tours, and left every visitor with unforgettable memories.
Now, his young family faces hardship, and their home is at risk of collapsing during the rainy season unless urgent repairs are made.
How You Can Help
This appeal has been set up at the request of those who knew and loved Taka, and wish to support his family in this difficult time.
I will pass all funds raised directly to his nephew, Lamin MM Keita, who has already begun raising money locally. Donations will help:
- Repair their family compound before the heavy rains
- Provide stability for Taka’s children and loved ones
- Continue the spirit of generosity and culture that Taka shared so freely
