Secure Sanitation and Hygiene in Kambimoto (Nairobi)

You are probably scrolling through your phone on the coziness of sitting on the loo. But don't flush, not yet. Hold it for another couple of minutes while I tell you a story worth 5 minutes of your attention.

I've been living in Kenya for a few months now. I came over on a volunteering project in waste management and thanks to this I have been in touch with a local community in Kambimoto (Nairobi).

To earn a living, people in this area go to the dumpsite to collect materials that they can resell for a few cents. They do this every day without any protective gear or proper sanitation. And guess what, unlike you, they cannot pee or poop in a normal toilet, as they simply do not exist in the slum.

As you can see it is an environment that would put anyone to the test.

But I am not here to get your pity, but rather to tell you a story of hope and inspiration.

“Flowers grow from manure” was sung by Fabrizio De Andrè and similarly here people have found a way to make the most of what they have.

A group in the community has come up with an ingenious system to turn the recycled materials into fine pieces of art, which are actually stunning.

We want to help in building the conditions of safety and hygiene that are essential prerequisites for a healthy life in the community.

As it is a systemic and complex issue we are tackling it from different angles, and we need your help!

We are running an event to address the topics of hygiene and safe waste management on 1st June in Kambimoto.

This will consist of:

Engaging the community on a local clean-up to collect waste

Run a training on health, hygiene and waste management

Having an exhibition of arts created from recycled waste

Furthermore, we’ll build a common washroom that will be available to the local community.

We are aiming at collecting 5000 € for this project. These will be spent in the below items:

Installation of a bathroom (Toilet, water tank and installation permit)

Equipment for safe waste collection (gloves, masks, shovels, jute bags, outdoor brooms)

While we raise funds we will update you step by step on the progress with videos and photos!

NON tirare lo sciacquone prima di donare!

Probabilmente stai scorrendo il telefono nell'intimità del tuo bagno. Ma non tirare lo sciacquone, non ancora. Aspetta un attimo mentre ti racconto una storia che vale 5 minuti della tua attenzione.

Vivo in Kenya ormai da alcuni mesi e faccio parte di un progetto di volontariato con un'associazione internazionale. Grazie a questo siamo entrati in contatto con una comunità locale a Kambimoto (Nairobi).

Per guadagnarsi da vivere, la gente di questa zona si reca nelle discariche per raccogliere materiali da rivendere per pochi centesimi. Lo fanno ogni giorno senza dispositivi di protezione o servizi igienico-sanitari adeguati. E indovina un po', a differenza di te, non possono fare pipì o fare la cacca in un normale bagno, dato che semplicemente non esistono nello slum.

Come vedete è un ambiente che metterebbe a dura prova chiunque.

Ma non sono qui per ottenere la tua pietà, ma piuttosto per raccontarti una storia di speranza e ispirazione.

“Dal letame nascono i fiori” cantava Fabrizio De Andrè e anche qui la gente ha trovato il modo di sfruttare al meglio ciò che ha.

Un gruppo della comunità ha escogitato un sistema ingegnoso per trasformare i materiali riciclati in pregiate opere d'arte, che sono davvero sorprendenti.

Vogliamo contribuire a costruire quelle condizioni di sicurezza e igiene che sono prerequisiti essenziali per una vita sana nella comunità.

Poiché si tratta di un problema sistemico e complesso, lo stiamo affrontando da diverse angolazioni e abbiamo bisogno del tuo aiuto!

Il 1° giugno a Kambimoto organizzeremo un evento per affrontare i temi dell'igiene e della gestione sicura dei rifiuti.

La giornata sarà così strutturata:
