The Dream Shop was never meant to be just a store.
It was created to be a soft place to land, a space in North Minneapolis where neighbors could walk in, exhale, and feel welcomed. Over time, it has become exactly that: a gathering place for community, culture, wellness, and connection.
My name is Markella Smith, founder of The Dream Shop and a longtime community outreach professional committed to building spaces where people feel seen, supported, and rooted in care. What began as a small storefront has grown into something the community clearly values, a place where local makers are uplifted, conversations happen across difference, and people find a moment of peace in the middle of heavy times.
And right now… these are heavy times.
In recent months, our communities across Minneapolis have been navigating deep uncertainty and fear. Large-scale federal immigration enforcement operations in the Twin Cities have led to thousands of arrests, widespread protests, and lasting strain on community trust and stability.
Spaces where people feel safe to gather, breathe, and support one another matter now more than ever.
Like many small, community-rooted businesses, The Dream Shop is also navigating real financial pressure in this season. Rather than simply reacting, we are choosing to move forward with intention and vision.
Our goal is not just to keep the doors open.
Our vision is to transition The Dream Shop into a permanently rooted community hub, a space that is stable, sustainable, and protected for the long term in North Minneapolis.
How Funds Will Be Used
Funds raised through this campaign will support two critical phases:
Phase 1: Stabilize and Strengthen (Immediate)
- Catch up on outstanding rent
- Build a modest operating and transition cushion
- Maintain consistent community programming
- Continue supporting local vendors and makers
Phase 2: Build the Path to Permanent Space (Next Stage)
- Prepare for future building acquisition
- Cover early due diligence and professional costs
- Strengthen financial readiness for commercial financing
- Lay the groundwork for a permanent community home
Every dollar moves us closer to a future where this space is not just surviving, but permanently rooted.
Why This Matters
If The Dream Shop has ever been a place where you felt welcomed…
If you believe North Minneapolis deserves spaces rooted in care and culture…
If you believe hope and community still matter in uncertain times…
We invite you to stand with us.
This is about more than a storefront.
It’s about protecting something our community has built together, and making sure it has a permanent home for the years ahead.
With deep gratitude,
Markella Smith
