Sebewaing Dog Park

Donation protected
We’re pleased to be leading the effort to establish a Dog Park in Sebewaing, MI. We recently entered a social media grant contest and just missed being one of four communities awarded a $25,000 grant. So close. Many who voted for us, suggested they would be willing to make a financial contribution to our efforts.

In 2013, Sebewaing established a Downtown Development Authority (DDA) dedicated to capturing tax revenue to use to revitalize our historic downtown river district. (A river flows through the downtown.) A dedicated team of volunteers have provided the oversight of the DDA since its inception. The same group of individuals have worked through other State of Michigan agencies and organizations like “Michigan Main Street” and “Redevelopment Ready Communities” to revitalize our downtown area. Additionally, the village updated its Master Plan and Recreation Plan.

In that timeframe, a seven acre industrial site adjacent to downtown has been reclaimed and is ready for development (approximately one acre of which is slated for a dog park.) The space will likely include commercial development, and new restaurant and entertainment venues. New businesses have already begun to take over old buildings, and activity is being restored. Adjacent to the Sebewaing Dog Park, a Riverfront Park is being considered as well. The Sebewaing Dog Park and the Riverfront Park will complement each other nicely.

We are a dog loving community and look forward to the benefits of having a dog park including drawing our community closer, building a dog friendly network and impacting positively outdoor recreation. It gives dogs a bit of freedom and can reduce troublesome behavior in dogs. Best of all, it will contribute to happier and healthier residents.

It’s over 20 miles to the closest dog park and even further for some of our neighboring communities. We look forward to having a Dog Park of our own and one to share with the other area towns and villages.

The initial funds will be utilized to establish the fenced-in perimeter, with gates, so the park can get up and running.
