With the rise of hate and hate crimes against LGBTQ folks, people of color (and specifically Black and Latinx folks), Muslim individuals and communities, and refugee and immigrant folks and the increasing normalization of rape and misogyny, resistance is critical. Protest, activism, civil disobedience and love are all amazing forms of resistance. There has also been a loud ask in Seattle for self-defense and de-escalation classes.
Cristien Storm, a founder of Home Alive*, and Becky Reitzes, a Home Alive instructor for nine years, want to increase the capacity offering self-defense classes in Seattle at this crucial time. To make these classes a reality, we need financial support. We are asking for $6,000. This money would pay for the following:
· Martial Arts mats and pads and supplies
· Facility maintenance / supplies
· Instructor time
· Supplies and handouts for classes
· Additional workshops related to social justice and activism
· Future needs such as childcare, interpreters, etc. to make these classes accessible and sustainable.
We are committed to making the classes free, with an ask for donations when possible. The donations will make the classes sustainable. The self-defense workshops are designed to be accessible and adaptable for all bodies and abilities. The goal is to provide tools that all people can use to defend themselves from violence. We are skilled at adapting the skills for all bodies and abilities.
All money raised will go into providing workshops and classes. In the unlikely event that there is a surplus of funds, that money will be donated to the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.
*Home Alive is a Seattle-based anti-violence organization that was started in 1993 following the brutal rape and murder of Mia Zapata, a local musician, woman, friend and activist. We see our work as integrated into larger social justice movements, recognizing how violence is often perpetuated through oppression and abuse.
