Hey guys! It’s Clare. The family I’m staying with here in Uganda is incredible. For what little they have, they have made the most of it. The mother of the household, Helen, trains local Ugandans to become entrepreneurs. As money comes in, the family buys crops, animals, supplies, etc. and loans them out to other people in the village. Basically their theory is, “I sell you this item at a lower cost so you can get started and you go out and make more of it and pay me back later.” This trading system gives people the opportunity to get up on their feet and supply their families with the things they need. They are so dang smart...and because of it they are living much better lives than most other Ugandans. They have the knowledge, land, and people to make this happen and they want to keep growing to help other Ugandans around them...they just don’t have the money to do so. I talked to the family I’m staying with and the best way we can help is to donate money for seed so they can make their own food and tend their own gardens/make more gardens throughout the village/make bigger and better gardens. This way they can feed their own families and then sell some of the produce to keep the system going. It’s all about sustainability and this is the best way to help them long term. One bag of seed runs about $120 which is super expensive for a Ugandan family. I’m asking for any and all donations for the bags of seed. I 100% know the family will use this money the way we have discussed and it will benefit the community in many ways.
I’ve also spent some time working at the local medical center. The youngest son of the house, Marc, is a medical officer and has been using what little money he has to buy medications for the center. He’s got such a big heart and gives everything he has to his people. He even started up his own pharmacy that he supplies to as well. However, he doesn’t make a profit off this pharmacy. He basically just breaks even so he can keep supplying his people. Depending on the amount of donations, I would like to give some money to Marc to help stock his pharmacy. I received a donation of 180 US dollars from a friend in Oregon and the picture attached shows just how much medicine it can buy! Just one US dollar can supply a Ugandan several treatments. I’m so passionate about this and I really hope you are willing to help. Any little bit will be accepted! We really have the opportunity to help this community. I will attach a link for you to click on and donate if you choose! Again, I appreciate it so much and I know this will make a difference in their lives. If you have any questions, let me know!
