This year, I set myself the challenge of completing a skydive, to raise money for a charity very close to home. On the 13th of October 2006, my brother Henry was diagnosed with cancer, it was just 8 days before his 5th birthday. The cancer was a Wilms Tumour which grew in his right kidney and made its way up to his heart.
Clic Sargent supported him and my family every step of the way, whether it was providing us with accommodation when visiting him in hospital or entertaining my brother whilst he was going through treatment.
They are such a wonderful charity and help families and their children who have been affected by cancer. They give day-to-day support, financial aid, accommodation, education and career prospects and bereavement support.
I’m sure that every single person reading this has been affected by cancer in some sort of way. So in order to raise money for this incredible charity, I will be jumping 15000ft out of a plane on the 1st of April!! If you can donate any money I would be so grateful and it’ll make me feel better about how high I will be jumping out of a plane
I asked my dad to speak about his experience with Clic Sargent from a parents point of view:
Scarlett is about to throw herself out of a plane and fly with no doubt an awful lot of screaming to accompany it! So it may be an idea to close your windows on the morning of April the 1st! That scream (of joy and a little bit of fear) will be a good reminder to us all to give to the charity that she is jumping for! The charity is Clic Sargent, it's a childrens cancer charity and as a family they got us through the time when we thought we might lose our boy, Henry to cancer. Henry was just four when he was diagnosed with cancer. It was quite advanced and if left much longer, the outcome may have been a different one. As parents, we had to be positive as it was up to us to keep Henry as unaware as he could be, of the terrible challenge we had been handed, we also had Scarlett to try and shield from the awfulness of the situation. When you think about something as life threatening as cancer you mostly think about the treatment to cure it, what is just as important is the support you need to get through it! Family support was amazing and vital, support from friends also great, but if we hadn't had Clic l don't know we could have kept it together. The main thing that Clic does is offer a house nearby to the hospital and this, for the two and half months that Henry had to stay at Bristol Childrens Hospital, became home. It kept us together as a family and in spite of the seriousness of the situation was full of joy and shared support. Now, many years later, my children, Henry and Scarlett are wonderful adults and so that time is actually heartwarming to think back on. Clic Sargent though, will every day, be waiting to help other families on the awful unknown battle with childhood cancer! So please help her to help these families on their journeys and really give Scarlett something to scream about! Thank you, Mark Pead.
