Dear Family and Friends,
As many of you know, in pre-Covid days, we were fortunate to have had the opportunity to journey to Nepal with a volunteer travel program. It was through that program that we met, and forged ongoing bonds with, 10 very special kids living together in a children's hostel/orphanage called Nepal Child Conservation Home (NCCH).
NCCH is one of many hostels set up by Nepalese non-profit groups to care for children whose families were either absent or unable to care for them in the wake of a brutal civil war which took place in Nepal from 1996-2006.
For many years ,the Kathmandu-based founders of NCCH have worked hard to provide the children who reside there with a safe place to live, food to eat, and an education.
Unfortunately, largely due to financial strain caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, NCCH has been forced to shut its doors.
The children who have called NCCH home since they were toddlers, are now suddenly homeless. In a developing country like Nepal, where very few social safety nets exist at the best of times, let alone in the middle of a global pandemic, this closure is devastating.
Fortunately, the founders of NCCH have been able to find alternate accommodations and education opportunities for the three youngest kids. But, unfortunately, the older seven kids are now on their own...jobless and penniless...in the middle of a pandemic. (I can barely type that without tearing up at the horror of the situation).
Acting quickly and with assistance from a former teacher, the kids have found a two room flat to move into. Between moving their meager possessions (which only amounts to some clothes, school supplies, bunk beds, and bedding), setting up their new home, and attempting to stay current with online classes, the kids are searching for part-time jobs in a city where jobs are few and far between due to the pandemic lockdowns.
We've created this Gofundme campaign to raise emergency funds to help these kids stay safe, sheltered, and to hopefully continue to receive an education during this incredibly difficult time.
It goes without saying that we're all stumbling through uncharted territory with Covid-19, but if you're able to do so, a donation of any amount would be so greatly appreciated.
With the exception of Gofundme and money transfer fees, every cent of your donation will go directly towards the children's expenses.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Angela, Claire, Leigh Anne, and Shannon
