Saving lives through recruiting blood donors in rural Ghana

In celebration of World Blood Donor Day in June, the Global Blood Fund and Our Blood Institute's donor community rallied together around an ambitious goal: raise $20,000 in one week to kick off Hope Christian Hospital's expansion into a local blood bank. By week's end, we raised an incredible $29,794.

Let's back up a bit....

Hope Christian Hospital is a rapidly growing, around-the-clock hospital on the Village of Hope campus that serves more than 30 rural communities in Ghana's Central Region.

Through our World Blood Donor Day campaign in June, Hope Christian Hospital hoped to attain equipment necessary to fulfill a longtime dream: its expansion to a regional blood bank. That dream is coming to fruition because of you.

Now that HCH has the necessary equipment to start their expansion into a blood bank, there is another vital piece to the puzzle....blood donors.

To wrap up a year of partnership with HCH, we are connecting with our donors once again to request support for recruitment endeavors at HCH.

What does this look like?

You know those T-shirts you get when you donate with OBI? Well, we are working with HCH to determine the incentives that will motivate their donors, because who doesn't love being rewarded and appreciated?

In comes the T-shirts...Our T-shirt partners, Cotton Images, have graciously agreed to donate T-shirts for this project, so we need this community to rally together to fund the printing and shipping of the T-shirts, and in-turn, incentivize donors to give blood at HCH.

Even more importantly, incentives like T-shirts are used as educational tools. The more a blood donor gives, the more their education surrounding blood donation increases.

As we embark on phase two of a blood bank expansion with Hope Christian Hospital, we invite you to join us. HCH has the equipment, we have the T-shirts, now let's partner with them to recruit blood donors to save lives in rural, coastal Ghana.
