Saving Gullah Cemeteries
Donation protected
One of the requirements to earn the Eagle badge is to “plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community. (The project must benefit an organization other than Boy Scouting.)”
The service project that I am planning to perform is the cleaning of four Historic Gullah Cemeteries. The 4 cemeteries are Talbird, Elliott, Amelia White, and Jenkins Island. Jenkins Island needs some tree removal and stump grinding, litter and debris clean-up, bush hogging, vegetative pruning, and grave clean-up. Talbird and Amelia White need litter and vegetative debris clean-up and grave clean-up. Elliott needs holes filled in with dirt, litter and vegetative debris clean-up, bush hogging, and planting wax myrtles. All four cemeteries will receive an identification sign saying “Historic Gullah Cemetery”.

I have received permits from the Town of Hilton Head Island and Hilton Head Plantation Architectural Review Board. The plans for my project have been drawn up and approved by Mt. Calvary Baptist Church who owns and maintains all four cemeteries.
While most of my materials and labor have been donated, there will still be costs for sign construction, equipment rental, and wax myrtles.
In order for this or any Eagle project to become reality, Scouts are encouraged to seek donations from the community. Any donation amount is appreciated and will help me complete my project and earn my Eagle rank in Scouting.
Thank you for helping me to achieve my dream of becoming an Eagle Scout!
