Royal East Relief Fund
Royal East has been a cornerstone of the Cambridge community for over 35 years. Established in 1985, just outside of Central Square, Royal East was the first Cantonese restaurant to break out of Chinatown. When owners Karen and Evans took over, Royal East became one of the only places in Massachusetts to serve authentic Malaysian cuisine. Royal East’s delicious food and warm atmosphere have brought comfort and joy to generations of residents, students, immigrants, and visitors who find the need for a piece of home in Cambridge. For so many people, Royal East is where we meet our friends & future partners, host our weddings & celebrations, and eventually bring our children. It is where we go for comfort food, and it is where we meet to ring in the New Year. Year after year, Royal East endures.
Royal East is in trouble: they have been hit hard by COVID. The students have left, the families are staying home (as they should), and travel has stopped. There are no more tourists. No more conferences or parties, and so, no more catering. Royal East’s dining room has been empty for months. Karen and Evans have been trying to get by on takeout, deliveries, and just a few dine-in tables, but it is not enough. With the way things are going, Royal East will have to shut down. This would be a tremendous loss for Cambridge.
With the vaccines starting to arrive, the end is in sight. However, business is still very slow. They’re now at a critical point: Royal East needs our help to survive. Now is the time to lean in. Here’s how you can help!
1) Donate to this campaign, in any amount. (Every bit helps!)
2) Purchase a gift card as a gift for your loved ones. (The gift card link can also be found on the main site, under "Home Page > More > Gift Cards".)
3) Order a meal online using Royal East's brand-new, in-house online ordering platform. (Please do not use 3rd-party delivery services, like Grubhub or Uber Eats. Those companies charge huge commissions, as high as 30% of each order, and Royal East can't afford to pay those fees.)
Finally, please spread the word about this campaign! Take a moment, right now, to think of three people whom you could ask to give. Please forward this link to them: https://gofundme.com/saveroyaleast
Your contributions will make the difference between Royal East closing down forever, and Royal East successfully riding out the end of COVID. They’ve made it this far. Don't let 35 years of meals, gatherings, and memories go down the drain. Together, we can see them through! Let’s help them bridge the gap!
