Mr. Chokkalingam is an Indian farmer from Tanjore district in TamilNadu. His family was into agriculture and had been doing agriculture for the past 70 years. His family was happy and wealthy until we started facing water scarcity in Tamil Nadu. Many parts of the State has been affected over the years and thousands of farmers have quit their farming profession and started to find other means of earning for their day to day living. Mr.Chokkalingam is no exception to that.
decided to quit farming and take up other day-to-day jobs that would feed his family of 6 members just enough for 3 meals a day. Though he does other jobs, when our team found him, he still has the passion for doing farming but cannot continue due to water scarcity. The finances to set up the infrastructure costs for getting underground water piles up to 10x times his annual income. We decided to help, to regain his farming and give hope to succeed.
What is our goal?
1) Setting up bore and motor
2) Consult Agriculture Experts to help him on the type of crop and better form of irrigation
3) Drip irrigation for efficient water consumption based on the crop chosen
With the above are we going to help only one farmer?
No, we have got the attention of two other farmers who were doing farming in his neighboring lands, who also left farming due to water scarcity. With the estimates we had, we could get the Bore installed at 100 feet max and the water would be enough to irrigate 5 acres of land which includes the neighboring lands too. As in future they share the water and do farming together.
How would we help?
We are working as a team of volunteers in the USA and also in India who are in direct contact with Mr.Chokkalingam and discuss with the Agricultural Experts/NGO on estimating the cost and benefit of various farming and help Mr.Chokkalingam to succeed again in farming profession.
Why specific farmer?
Our goal is to start with one farmer. And our find is Mr. Chokkalingam. As we all know,
"Small drops of water makes an Ocean."
We require your help, to help us Succeed in this campaign and "Save our farmer!"
