STOP the demolition of Lexington Center! Preserving Lexington Center Reflects the Values of its Citizens.
We are a green community that uses resources wisely and is always striving to improve on how we successfully deliver large community projects. The Board of Selectmen have in the past embraced innovative approaches to achieving these goals.

A careful analysis of the current Streetscape Design Documents reveal a project that is demolishing every tree, curb, and brick sidewalk in Lexington Center. In reaction to this destructive design, and after reviewing various scientifically based studies in an 8 to 1 vote, the Ad Hoc Committee concluded that the center can be made safer and more accessible while preserving the rich, internationally recognized mid-century modern heritage that we enjoy today.
We are striving for a vastly improved, cost effective project, one that is rooted in Preservation that has character, avoids the artificial, and is distinctively Lexington. We support our business community and want to avoid a serious and wasteful streetscape overhaul that would change the nature of Lexington forever. Please join a growing list of over 1,600 concerned citizens who believe in improving our Historic Center NOT demolishing it.

Tell the selectmen you support the Ad/Hoc Committee and their work to Preserve and Improve Lexington Center for common good of all Lexington Citizens. A small very motivated group of insiders with very specific special interests hijacked this basic roadway project and transformed it into a narrowly defined Streetscape project which focused almost exclusively on safety and accessibility and completely neglected a comprehensive vision for the preservation of one of the towns most successful and cherished public spaces. We can make safety upgrades without a complete demolition.
In doing so we face the loss of an architectural landmark of historical significance and most importantly a treasured place where most Lexingtonians enjoy spending time.
The 25% Streetscape design document contains:
Site plans; Financial project budget; Colored perspective renderings; Material and furniture
recommendations. Upon close inspection and detailed analysis of these documents, the 25 % design requires the following actions to occur:
-Spending a minimum of $ 10,000,000 dollars for design and construction services.
-Cutting and removing 76 of 80 existing trees
-Demolishing all the existing brick sidewalks and replacing them with concrete sidewalks with decorative brick trim
-Removing relocating and eliminating all the granite street curbing and planters
-Discarding the existing benches, trash receptacles and bike racks and replacing with new replacements
-Replacing all the existing roadway lights and pedestrian lanterns
-Adding decorative stone walls and artifacts including replica cannons to the Streetscape
Please help us keep continue to raise awareness! We need to finanance yard signs, advertising, design, social media, fliers and perhaps even legal advice. We can stop this massive wasteful project and can use our resources to start home spun community efforts to get out and care for our town center! We can see that neglected plants and shrubs are restored, replace trees, maintain bricks, see that crosswalks and lighting are improved, among many other sensible measures that will keep the community safe and beautiful!
Thank you!
