Hi, my name is Shaya and I'm 19 years old. I am taking a gap year and will be studying Veterinary Physiotherapy next year! I am fundraising for a volunteering trip to Sri Lanka with The Mighty Roar to save the turtles! I will be staying near Akruala beach which is a hot spot for sea turtles with around 15,000 eggs being collected there every year. I am planning to go in February and stay for four weeks. Once I am there, I will be patrolling the beaches at night to transport eggs to the hatchery, release baby sea turtles into the ocean, clear the beach of any rubbish, rescue injured or stranded sea turtles and guard the hatchery from poachers.

This project is important to me because there are too many species that are going extinct or becoming endangered and conservation work is one of the main ways to slow or even prevent this from happening. I am so passionate about the welfare of animals and the biodiversity of our planet so I wanted to do something meaningful that will have a positive effect on this beautiful species.

Unfortunately, the volunteer fees alone are nearly £1000, this is money I am paying directly to the charity and doesn't include the cost of my flights chich are nearly £1000 on their own. To fundraise money, I am organising two bake sales and a charity spin alongside using this page to collect some donations. I am also trying to get tables at local fairs as well in order to fundraise enough money to cover everything. Any donations are massively appreciated and go straight towards my volunteer fees.
