Save The Rod Studios: A Creative Safe Space in Newark

Hi, my name is Manii. I’m a single mother, a creative, and the founder of The Rod Studios, a Black woman-led production studio, creative collective, and independent media hub based in Newark, NJ.

In December 2023, I took my life savings and opened The Rod Studios. Not just to chase my own dream, but to create a space where other people like me could chase theirs too. I wanted to build what I never had: a safe, judgment-free space where creativity is taken seriously and Black artists are prioritized, not overlooked.

In January 2025, I launched The Creative Collective NJ. It started with a group of hungry interns who showed up eager to learn. Since then, I’ve mentored them, invested in them, and helped equip them with tools, confidence, and purpose. We’ve grown together, and that includes me too.

Since launching this space, I’ve become a camera operator, a video editor, a producer, a creative director, and a full-time studio owner. I didn’t go to film school. I didn’t come from money. I’ve learned everything hands-on while keeping this space alive and giving others a shot.

I’ve also helped other members of the collective get the equipment and resources they needed to take their passions seriously. From cameras to mics to software, I’ve poured into their potential because I don’t just believe in my own dream. I believe in theirs too.

In March 2025, we officially launched The Rod Studio Network, an independent content platform where we showcase our original shows, podcasts, music performances, fitness classes, and community content. We make something out of nothing, every day, in this one space.

And now that space is at risk.

We urgently need to raise $5,000 to cover rent and basic operating costs. Without it, we lose the home base that made all of this possible.
