Save the Potato House

Dearest Friends,

We're writing the letter to you that we hoped we'd never need to.

We at the Potato House have had the privilege to spend ten years deeply involved in the beautiful community of Williams Lake. Our heritage site nurtures bees, helps residents grow their own food, avoid bear break-ins with a compost drop off, offers soil amendment to nourish your garden, and throws amazing parties. What we haven't told anyone, is that even with three employees, working un-paid, and every fundraising event being so much fun, we desperately need your help.

Ten years ago a silent funder benevolently loaned us the money to purchase the Potato House property that so many of you love so well. The agreement was that the money would be paid back $10,000 per year until the full amount (plus a small amount of interest) was covered. The 2017 fire season occurred during prime fundraising time. While everyone was evacuated, an unpaid employee of the Potato House paid the bills to keep the house insured and running, but what we couldn't do was pay our mortgage. Understandably, this also caused hardship for the silent funder and their family, and in 2018 we were graciously given three years to pay off the balance or find a new funder. Hard work, determination, donations, and hundreds of volunteer hours have allowed us to make the regular payment this year, but with time ticking by we feel it is now necessary to share our plight with you and ask our community to rally their support and relieve our silent funder of their burden.

Losing the Potato House is simply not an option, and while we can all fantasize about the amazing programs that could be made available with the house paid off and that money we raise going straight back into events and services, we need your help to get there.

The remaining balance owing is just over $56,000, and we will continue to put on fun, family oriented fundraising events, but it is very clear that more is required and we can't do this without you.

If you or someone you know wishes to help, donations can be made to the Potato House directly through the Credit Union and at all of our events. Our next super exciting event is our Pirate Party AGM on September 19th. Bring your kids, dress like a pirate, and support our important cause! Entry is free for members, and $5 for everyone else over 12 years old. Conveniently our membership is also only $5! A donation box will be on site, but you are not required to donate to attend.
